What is a maiko?

Kyoto, the ancient stronghold of the Japanese culture, attracts millions of tourists from around the world. Kyoto is one of the cities in Japan where maikos, young ladies aged from 16 to 20, begin their training to become a geiko (professional entertainer). In order to become a geiko, they must undergo rigorous training for a period of approximately five years to master dance, music (including the shamisen), and other traditional Japanese arts to entertain guests attending the ozashiki (banquet). Though very young, maikos value tradition, and they dress up in beautiful kimonos, competing with each other in beauty and gracefulness. Through their apprenticeship in the geisha world, they mature into sophisticated geikos who are both knowledgeable in Japanese arts and highly educated. Young maikos strive to lead a life of beauty, making themselves an embodiment of Japanese history and culture.
